The Crest of the Family of Couper
The crest as engraved upon this set of four George III English Sterling Silver Serving Platters by John Wakelin and William Taylor hallmarked London 1789 is that of the family of Couper. It may be blazoned as follows:
Crest: A dexter arm embowed holding in the hand a garland proper
Motto: 'Virtute' [By virtue]
Certainly this crest and its associated motto are common with a number of families bearing the name of Couper, although a hand is sometimes used rather than a whole arm. The use of the motto shown on its scroll above the crest denotes that the family who at one time owned this set of four platters was of Scots origin where certainly a number of Couper families were resident..Price: £4,400
