The Crest of the Family of Grattan
The crest as engraved upon this George II English Sterling Silver Basting Spoon by Ebenezer Coker hallmarked London 1746 is that of the family of Grattan. It may be blazoned as follows:
Crest: A dove proper and holding in its dexter claw a sceptre and standing on a barrel
It would appear that the Grattans are of Irish decent. Certainly a daughter (and an heraldic heiress) of the family married into the Bellews, Baronets of Mount Bellew in the County of Galway in the 19th century, the Bellews thereafter assumed by Royal Licence dated 19th March 1859, the additional name and arms of Grattan. This spoon which undoubtedly was at one time part of canteen of silver may very well have been in the possession of a member of the Grattans, of Belcamp Park in the County of Dublin. Certainly, this particular family had as a member The Rt Hon Henry Grattan (born 3rd July 1746 died 6th June 1820) who sat both in the Irish House of Commons in Dublin and later in the House of Commons at Westminster. He was opposed to the Union of the Kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland that eventually came into being on the passing of the Act of Union in 1800.
