The Marital Arms of Bennet and Wake

The arms as engraved upon this Queen Anne English Sterling Silver Rat Tailed Basting Spoon by William Scarlett hallmarked London 1713 are those of the family of Bennet impaling those of the family of Wake. These armorial bearings denote the marshalling of a marital coat showing on the dexter (the heraldic right on the left as you view the piece) the arms of the husband and on the sinister (the heraldic left on the right as you view it) the arms of the wife. They may be blazoned as follows:

    Arms:

(on the dexter)    Gules a bezant between three demi lions rampant argent (for Bennet)

(on the sinister)    Or two bars and in chief three roundels gules and on the fess point a trefoil slipped vert for difference (for Wake)

I believe, therefore, that upon the balance of probability and without any evidence to the contrary these conjoined arms commemorate the marriage of an as yet unnamed gentleman of the Bennet family to an as yet unnamed daughter of the Wake family. The gentleman in question was undoubtedly descended from an earlier branch of his family and related to a Bennet cousin, who was created the Earl of Tankerville in 1714 and, further, it is likely that the lady in question was a related in some way to William Wake, Archbishop of Canterbury (born 1657 died 1737; Archbishop of Canterbury 1716 - 1737) who bore these same arms with its trefoil for difference.

It is interesting to note that both the arms of Bennet and Wake appear individually on monuments in the Chapel of St Martin at Fenny Stratford in the County of Buckingham where the Bennets had an interest in land. One of the baronetcies of England that was created for members of this family in the 17th century was styled of Bechhampton (later Beachampton) in the same county. This baronetcy fell into extinction in 1631 some four after its creation in 1627.
