Superb quality armorial George II silver marrow scoop Paul De Lamerie

    Reference: pdl

This extremely rare armorial George II silver marrow scoop was made in London in 1741 by Paul de Lamerie and measures 8.25 inches in length and has a full coat of arms to the back of the bowl. It is fully and clearly hallmarked to the back of the stem and is in excellent condition with no problems. The quality is that expected of one of the finest (some say THE finest) silversmiths ever with a lovely patina and colour, a fine piece from a master of his craft and very collectable.

The Arms of the Family of Shrubsole

The arms as engraved upon this George II English Sterling Silver Marrow Scoop by Paul De Lamerie hallmarked London 1741 are upon the balance of probability and without any evidence to the contrary those of the family of Shrubsole. They may be blazoned as follows:

Arms:    Argent three cherry trees vert fructed gules each upon a mount of the second*

*It would appear that the engraver has stylized the mounts for at first glance the trees seem to be eradicated rather than each tree issuing from a grassy mound.

These arms are shown on a lozenge which would ordinarily indicate the arms of an unmarried daughter of the family. The Shrubsoles were well established Kentish family. It is noted in one authority that these arms were borne by a branch of the family who were resident in Canterbury.
