Superb large Queen Anne Britannia silver cannon barrel basting ladle London 1704

This excellent quality very large Queen Anne Britannia standard silver cannon barrel basting spoon or ladle was made in London in 1704 by William Mathew I and measures almost 18.5 inches in length and has a deep, well formed bowl of good gauge measuring 4.5 inches long by 3.5 inches at its widest. The cast cannon barrel handle is marked with the makers mark (rubbed) and it has a baluster shaped finial to the end. To the back of the bowl is a lovely florid original engraving of scrolling acanthus leaves, belle flowers and scrolls with a central round cartouche bearing the double cipher initial of CB, it is fully and very clearly hallmarked to the side of the bowl and also to the bottom of the stem with the lions head erased. A very fine and large basting spoon in lovely condition with no problems and a welcome addition to any collection!
